Food Delivery Services: What to Know About Creating Your Own For Your Restaurant


If you own a restaurant, the idea of delivering your food to customers may have come to mind. After all, how hard could it be to take the food that someone orders from an online food ordering system in Australia and deliver it to their doorstep? Achieving this logistical feat for many people is not entirely simple or affordable. 

You could go through a third-party source, but there are fees involved in every transaction, and those high fees can easily eat away at already thin margins. So, if you are thinking of creating your delivery service for your restaurant, then here are a few things that you need to consider.

1. Vehicles, Drivers and Petrol

If you want to create a dedicated delivery service for your restaurant, you have to get the food to the customers. That means you’ll need delivery vehicles to do that for you. You’ll also have to hire a driver and consider the petrol costs to fuel this endeavour. 

 2. Delivery Prep Staff

If your restaurant gets to a point where it is processing 30 or more delivery orders in a day, then you will need to ensure that you have dedicated staff for those delivery orders. That may mean a single person whose sole responsibility is coordinating or handling delivery.

That one person would be in charge of ensuring the food has been prepared properly, receiving the orders, getting any bags ready with menus and promotional materials, and even double-checking the orders before they leave. You can prepare and train a kitchen staff member to fulfil this function as part of their role if orders are not overwhelming and the kitchen staff member is not overly busy.  

 3. Tracking System

You should also ideally have an effective way to track the entire delivery process. This will allow you to see when an order has left, whether it has been dropped off or when your driver is returning.

You also need to know when a driver is ready to take the next batch of orders out to know when the next batch can begin being prepared. If you wing this, your business could easily fall behind, suffer long wait times, and have to deal with dissatisfied customers. 

 4. Insurance

Insurance may not always be fun and interesting, but it is necessary, especially for a restaurant. Vehicle insurance, worker compensation insurance, and other general liabilities are some of the insurance covers you will need to consider when coordinating food delivery.

 5. Packaging

When food is delivered, it needs to be packed into suitable containers or boxes, with possibly some added disposable cutlery. Obtaining a reliable supply of such packaging items is therefore required. Packaging can also involve putting your branding on any boxes, containers or bags to give customers a full experience of your brand. However, it would involve design considerations and higher packaging costs. 

 6. Food Storage for Transportation

Food will sometimes have to travel a long way to reach its destination. That requires keeping food as fresh as possible and at the ideal temperature for as long as possible in transit. When you deliver soggy, cold, or inedible food, that customer is unlikely to order from you again. Therefore, investing in things such as coolers, boxes, and insulated bags to transport food safely is an essential part of food delivery.

 There are so many factors that go into starting a delivery service within your own business that it can feel overwhelming for most. However, if the volume is there, this could prove beneficial and profitable and allow a restaurant to grow further.
