Learning Languages with Anki &Spaced Repetition

24

Spaced repetition methodology is based on learning a new material and then reviewing it spaced out intervals. The process often involves the use of flashcards.

The learner is presented with a flashcard to decide whether it is “easy” or “hard.” Based on this evaluation, the app’s Spaced Repetition System (SRS) algorithm determines the frequency with which the flashcard is shown for review the next time.

Regular practice helps the learner move information from short-term memory to long-term memory. Spaced repetition can be seen as an enhancement over the old paper flashcard technique that attempts to cram the material into the student’s memory, regardless of how successfully the student memorized the material. This makes the learning process daunting and unpleasant.

Anki – A Spaced-Repetition Software

Anki is seen by many as one of the best flashcard software apps based on spaced repetition. The word “Anki” means “memorization.” Interestingly, Anki was not developed initially or marketed as a language-learning app. However, it is beneficial for learning new vocabulary and grammar. Anki provides a good balance between ease of use and useful features. You can try it for yourself and decide if it deserves the popularity.

How Many Words to Understand A language

“How many words do I need to understand X% of the language?” Stuart Webb, a professor of linguistics at the University of Western Ontario, says that a typical native speaker is between 15,000 and 20,000 word families. A word family is a group of words that share the same root (e.g. break, breaker, broken, etc. all count as a word family). A language student learning the 800 most common English words can understand 75% of the language used daily.

Francis and Kucera found in a 1982 study that a vocabulary of 2,000-word families was sufficient to cover almost 80 percent of written English. According to Professor Webb, to understand film or television dialogue, knowing the 3,000 most common word families is necessary. A similar statement was made by the famous linguist Paul Nation, who defines 3000 as the appropriate threshold for high-frequency words required by a second language learner.

Using a Book as a Guide when Learning a Language with Anki

You may have come across many Anki decks online. Some are shared for free, and some are sold online. However, the issue with these flashcards is that most do not have a clear learning strategy to guide the learner. The student attempts to study as many cards as possible. However, memorization is not sufficient to master a language. Getting a foreign language requires a good understanding of the material reviewed by the Anki flashcards.

To tackle this, the products from ADROS VERSE EDUCATION provide this missing link. A combination of books and flashcards provides the necessary introduction through grammar lessons and progressive difficulty to help you advance your language level using the Anki app.
