Using ARC
ARC (and its updated cousin eARC) reduces the HDMI cables needed to connect your TV to a soundbar or speaker system and delivers high-quality audio. You can even disable your TV’s tiny speakers that often sound flat. Furthermore, with Consumer Electronics Control features (Bravia Link from Sony or SimpLink from LG, for example) integrated into HDMI, you can control external devices like Blu-ray players and satellite boxes using your remote control from within your television screen.
One downside of ARC is that it doesn’t support all audio codecs; as such, your setup might be limited to only two-channel stereo or Dolby Digital. Furthermore, your AV receiver or soundbar must keep it for you to take full advantage of ARC. At the same time, some extra configuration may be necessary within your TV settings menu or app to activate it properly.
As the HDMI interface has progressed, ARC has also advanced. ARC 2.0 (eARC) now boasts twice as much bandwidth and can uncompress Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks without loss. Contrasting older S/PDIF connections, HDMI cables enable bitstreaming of higher-fidelity formats over the HDMI cable itself. This opens up the potential for immersive audio streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus to encrypt their Dolby Atmos content into ARC-compatible lossy Dolby Digital Plus formats for an immersive listening experience. Troubleshooting ARC
ARC can be a fantastic concept in theory, but in practice can cause several headaches. Read user reviews on any product with ARC support to see the myriad of frustrated users who struggled to make it work properly – this may be incredibly challenging if you own both an older TV and soundbar or mix brands of equipment.
First, verify that your TV and surround sound receiver or speaker are compatible with ARC technology. Next, look out for any interference from electronic devices or physical objects that might interfere with signal reception. Lastly, it is essential to ensure HDMI cables are undamaged or functioning, as this can also contribute to issues with ARC.
If the ARC function still doesn’t work after trying all these steps, it could be related to your AV receiver or soundbar itself. Search for brand or model-specific guides online or contact its manufacturer for additional support.
One important note: HDMI eARC is necessary for bitstream Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, or DTS:X soundtracks if they require bit streaming. However, if you’re streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify, ARC should meet your needs if the sound quality meets your standards. However, using cables that support eARC for higher-quality audio output would be best. Otherwise, ARC is an effective way to streamline your home theater setup and enjoy better sound. Unfortunately, you’ll have to use separate audio cables between your Blu-ray player and soundbar or speakers and your Blu-ray player; this may add cost. However, it can make an immense difference in dealing with TV speakers once set up successfully!
